Police believes Chinese man swallowed $107,348 Yakut diamond

Two Chinese suspected of stealing a large Yakut diamond in Jewellery Exhibition JUNWEX in St. Petersburg. Investigators believe that they have stolen it by swapping for a fake gemstone, then one of them has swallowed it.

JUNWEX was opened on 1 February. A representative of one of jewelry companies exhibited products in mount Diamonds of Yakutia when he missed a 3.01-carat diamond. The $107,348 diamond was swapped for a fake gemstone.

The suspects, a 30-years-old Chinese woman Liu Limei and her 37-years-old compatriot Liu Bo, were detained on the same day. They entered Russia on a tourist visa.

Personal search of two suspects did not give results as the diamond was not found. According to one version, Mr. Liu Bo swallowed the gem during the exhibition JUNWEX. X-ray and ultrasound didn’t reveal the diamond inside his stomach, so police and doctors have to wait the diamond to go outside naturally.

A criminal case for stealing the gem was opened. The Chinese woman was remanded in custody.
